Feeling a bit chatty today. 🙂
My newest game obsession is “DC Universe Online”…which you may have guessed is a superhero game, set in the world of Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman and the other DC characters. The thing about this one that’s different…is it’s a “free to play game”, an MMO, like World Of Warcraft.
Scary territory to be in, really…these games are life and wallet suckers.
Yes, I said it’s “free to play”…so how can it be a “wallet sucker”? Easy. Paywalls. For example, you earn cash as a part of your heroic daring-do. If you’re a free member (like I am…I saw this game on Steam and it said it was free for the taking, so I did), you get to keep the first in-game funds (not real money, of course) of $1500…all other monies go into an escrow account. How do you access said escrow? By paying various amounts of REAL MONEY to the game company to lift this particular paywall.
That’s the one I dealt with first…all my equipment was broken and needed fixing, something that costs cash and my character was broke…with almost $2000 in escrow. :/ So…I put $5 to the game and got that out. INSIDIOUS, really…but that was the worst of the paywalls I’ve ran into, really…the others have been for extra content, areas to play in, stuff like that, harmless.
All in all, I just got a $60 retail game for free…with a catch. 😛
Nyxon for today. 🙂
