So…we like to get controversial up in this house occasionally, right? And please remember, all thoughts contained within are MY THOUGHTS ONLY…get out there and explore the stuff I’m writing about before forming yours and in no way am I saying I’m “right” about this. Let’s talk “whitewashing”.
It’s an SJW term…”SJW” meaning, “social justice warrior”, people who need the world to be run “right” or they’re offended about it (coughcough…firstworldproblems…coughcough)…it stands for the lead of a movie being white despite all reason for him/her to be one. There’ve been two big cases lately.
First one was “Ghost In The Shell”, a movie starring Scarlett Johansson as the lead character despite the anime it’s based off of being about a JAPANESE character. The concept of whitewashing didn’t really hit me with this one…then along comes Matt Damon’s new movie, “The Great Wall”…
This looks bad. As in “so bad it’s good” bad.
It’s set in ancient China…long before Americans were traveling abroad…and stars Matt Damon. Watching the trailer for this movie and seeing Matt stand out amongst the literal sea of Asian actors there as extras blew my fucking mind and I literally laughed out loud when I wasn’t supposed to…what were they THINKING?! There are plenty of Asian actors out there who could have carried this role fine, but they chose a White boy. What? Were? They? Thinking?! And yah, I’m savvy enough about movies and Hollywood enough to know you need star power to make something sell, but again, hire an Asian for the project! They’re out there and have actual star power. :/ I actually bought in to the whole trend against whitewashing for a bit…
…then another SJW got all pissed off at Marvel character “Iron Fist” being cast as a white guy instead of an Asian, when the character as he exists in his comics actually IS a white dude looking in to Asian culture. Back to hating SJW’s. 🙂
Seriously, at least in this case, Daniel Rand, Iron Fist, IS white. it added complexity to Daniel’s story as he was like a stranger in a strange land occasionally as he made his way through his stories…Matt Damon stood out in “The Great Wall” like a sorer than sore thumb and looked tragically ridiculous. On the bright side, the movie looks interesting as they’ve made it a MONSTER movie as the wall wasn’t built to hold back Genghis Khan…but instead a giant dragon. Who could prolly fly over the thing. 😛 I kid there…it looks like it might be a good movie despite the horrid casting; I might have to excuse the “white boy needed in ancient China to save the day when all the Chinese in the country couldn’t” theme this movie is throwing out (Jesus, I sounded like an SJW there…damn this movie for dragging me down to these depths) and see it. Interesting concept at least.
Kendra James for today. 🙂
