  1. Ugh – I’m not sure what’s worse, Tony: a woman who drenches herself in perfume, or a guy who drenches himself in musky aftershave. But both are really horrible to have to sit near for any length of time….

    Historically in the West, perfume was used as a substitute for bathing, back when even the wealthy didn’t bathe regularly. Part of it was the fear that bathing was somehow an act of “Oriental” pleasure without any redeeming social value, and thus ungodly – along with the belief that it weakened you somehow. You can imagine how much social engineering the British, who were I think the first Western culture to connect good hygiene with disease prevention, had to engage in to defeat those prejudices!
